Photo tips
for travelers

Be savvy about buying and using cameras. Click Photo Tips for my candid 14-page online guide. I give advice on buying camera equipment as well as on taking great pictures. Here's a brief sampling:

Manual
I have seen many travelers with new cameras who neglected to pack the essential instruction booklet. Even if you have been using your camera for months, there's bound to be some detail you forgot - or you encounter a situation that requires using an unfamiliar feature.

Lens cap
It's easily lost if it isn't attached to the lens or camera with a cord. This piece is essential for protecting SLR camera lenses from scratches. And it's a good idea to bring a spare cap because it's easy to lose one during the distractions of travel.

Camera bag
If you have an expensive SLR and lens, invest in a quality camera bag that has ample padding and is weatherproof. It's a wise decision when you figure potential repair bills and replacement costs.

List price
You can almost always purchase a camera significantly below its list price. That figure is set by the camera manufacturer, not the retailer.
