Shutter release

This helps eliminate the camera shake that occurs when you press the shutter button. Note: Some cameras can accommodate remote cord or wireless shutter triggers.

Lens hood

This device is also called a lens shade. You attach it to a SLR camera lens to reduce glare from side and overhead lighting (sun, ceiling lights, among other sources).

Logbook or voice recorder

The mental details about a picture are sharp when you take it, but become fuzzy by the time you return home. Some cameras have built-in recorders.

Cleaning kit

Buy it as a kit - or assemble your own.

Lens-cleaning cloth - For removing dust and fingerprint smudges off your lens - and your LCD screen. Warning: Facial tissues, paper towels, and ordinary cloth could micro-scratch these delicate surfaces.

Bulb blow brush - It gently removes dust in hard to reach areas. I recommend it over canned compress air products. Many contain a chemical that could harm camera parts.

Cotton swab - This drugstore-available product helps remove clinging particles and other material that bulb blow brushes cannot dislodge.

Toolkit

Bring a mini screwdriver. You never know when you will have to make an emergency camera repair in the boondocks.
