31 mistakes safari-goers make

and how to avoid them

Safari mistake 1

Missing the

Serengeti migration

because of not knowing

where to be when

Know the path and

schedule of the

Serengeti migration

before you select a safari trip

The highlight of an African safari is seeing the annual Serengeti migration.

Over a million large wild animals travel the 500-kilometer (300-mile) circular Serengeti migration route. If you are in a particular safari area too early or late, the migrating animals won't be there.

The red symbols on my animated Migration Map on the left show where the migrating herds will likely be concentrated in a given month.

Keep in mind

My map depicts annual Serengeti migration averages. Local seasonal rains and droughts do not always stick to schedule along the Serengeti migration route. This has been especially true in recent years in Africa due to El Nino and La Nina climatic effects.

You do not necessarily have to be in a location during the exact month indicated on my Serengeti migration map. You could be there a month or so earlier or later and chances are it won't matter. The key is not to be in a location too far before or after its normal peak month if you want to view the Serengeti migration.

Should your schedule dictate that your best option is to go during a non-migration period, do go. Click here for reason it would be a mistake not to take that option.
