Late November through early March has the best weather. May to October is the rainy, humid season.

Day tours

I highly recommend the 7-bay day tour that sails along the rocky Huatulco National Park shoreline. Typically, your boat stops at a virgin beach for snorkeling, swimming, and sunbathing. Then the captain puts you ashore at secluded Maguey Bay for lunch at one of its casual palm-thatched beachside eateries for freshly caught and cooked seafood.

Other day tours take you to a local archaeological site, a waterfalls, and a town with a picturesque zocalo (town square).

Side trip

If you have the time, take a two- or three-day side trip to Oaxaca city to enjoy its acclaimed food and colonial architecture - and the nearby Monte Alban and Mitla archeological sites (both are Hillman Wonder medal winners).

Fly, don't drive to Oaxaca. The first takes one hour, the second entails eight hours of stressful driving each way on a switch-backing mountainous road.
