is special
Stratford-upon-Avon is the birthplace of the Elizabethan playwright and poet
William Shakespeare. A picturesque setting of half-timbered buildings await the

Stratford-Upon-Avon

Shakespeare
was born (1564) and grew up here. Following a long residence in London creating
his renowned literary works, Shakespeare moved back to Stratford-upon-Avon to
retire. He died at the age of 52.

The
photogenic thatched-roof Anne Hathaway's cottage (see photo) is the
attraction that visitors love most. It lies just outside of town and was the childhood home of Anne,
Shakespeare's future wife. You can tour inside the house and walk through the
Shakespeare-era garden.

Stratford-upon-Avon
has several related theatres, including the Royal Shakespeare Theatre where you
can attend the bard's plays. Note: Tickets sell out quickly.

Late
spring and early fall are the best times to visit. Bevies of tour busses from
London and other big cities descend on Stratford-upon-Avon in the summer.
