This secluded, peaceful resort sits on the edge of a rocky seacliff overlooking Hulopoe Bay with its pristine, crescent-shaped sandy beach. Accommodations, service, and dining are commendable. And the resort's world-class golf course is a short walk away

Four Seasons Manele Bay is not for those who like being near the action. The island's tiny, simple town is 20 minutes away by car and it takes 45 minutes by ferry to reach Maui.

Families

Grand Wailea  Maui

The mini-waterpark of this 780-room resort is a kid's dream. A series of terraced pools are connected with waterslides and artificial rapids. And the wide beach in front is beautiful.

I do not recommend Grand Wailea to couples (especially honeymooners) seeking a tranquil vacation. The tons-of-kids-having-fun scene is noisy and hectic.

Ritz Carlton Kapalua  Maui

Guests enjoy championship golf courses, sumptuous lodging, beautiful landscaping, and excellent service at a beautifully landscaped ocean-side setting.

The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua is ideal for seclusion getaways. However, if you come to Maui primarily to see its attractions, you might find this resort inconveniently distant from them. And the locale tends to be rainier and windier than other resort areas.

in the most famous lodging

Royal Hawaiian  Waikiki Beach, Oahu

Its 1927 structure - with its pastel-pink exterior and striking interior decor - is one of the state's major historic icons. And it presents a celebrated festive luau on Monday nights.

The Royal Hawaiian is not for travelers who dislike touristy places. And the rooms in the old part of the complex are relatively small.
