Hurricane season

Positives

Costs plummet. Competition for airline seats dwindles to next to nothing. Nearly all the beaches and reefs are practically deserted.

Negatives

Cruise ships

The vast majority have left for the Mediterranean and other good-weather locations. The few that sail in the Caribbean do it mainly at the beginning and end of the hurricane season - or stick to short cruises (such as to the Bahamas).

Stores, restaurants, and nightspots

The number of shuttered land establishments is at its maximum.

Climate

This period is called the hurricane season for good reason. And if you don't encounter a hurricane, you may not be as fortunate with tropical storms. Another drawback: The humidity is uncomfortably high.
