Travel tips you can trust
Why Hierapolis
in Turkey is special
It was once a Roman spa town famous for its therapeutic thermal spring waters. Today, its ruins are popular with tourists.
Plateia
This long colonnaded street is lined with ancient structures. Some are well-preserved.
Theatre
Roughly 12,000 people once sat in this amphitheatre for plays and more. In our time, a music festival is held here, but with far fewer usable seats.
Museum
It occupies the ancient Roman Bath building and exhibits artifacts from Hierapolis and beyond.
Sacred Pool
You can swim in its warm thermal waters with portions of sunken columns lying on the pool's floor.
Nacropolis
This cemetery has 1,200 tombs and interesting sarcophagi.
Other interesting attractions
They include the Plutonium, Temple of Apollo, Nymphaeum, and Martyrium. Add to that lasit the two gates that bookend Plateia street.
The renowned Pamukkale's pool terraces sit on the slope directly below Hierapolis. Click Pamukkale to read my web page on this wonder.
