The 11 travel
wonders in
Antarctica

Note: Like other continents, Antarctica as a whole does not qualify for a
Hillman Wonder medal. However, it wins 11 medals collectively (see below).

Antarctica
Cruise
You cruise ship takes you to our planet's most inaccessible continent.
Sightseeing highlights include iceberg calvings, penguin colonies, and the
Lemaire Channel.

Antarctica
Iceberg Calving
Icebergs are calved when they break off an ice shelf's face. Some times the
separated piece is so enormous that it creates a Herculean sound and tidal wave.

Antarctica
Penguin Colonies
Some have populations numbering in the hundreds of thousands. They are located
around the continent's coastline, including in the area visited by cruise ships.

Lemaire &
Neumayer Channels
Cameras aboard cruise ships click frequently when the vessels travel through
the incredibly stunning Lemaire Channel and Neumayer Channel on the Antarctica
Peninsula.

Deception
Island
This island is a popular cruise ship stop because of its unique caldera bay
harbor and the opportunity to bath in outdoor thermal heated water in the cold
climes.

Dry Valleys
It has hardly rained in the last two million years in the area named the Dry
Valleys. Result: A waterless desert on a continent famously known for its thick
ice sheet.

Jagged
Mountain Peaks
Tall pointed mountains shaped like tiger teeth jut out of the Polar Icecap.
They are now challenging adventure climbers.

Paradise
Harbor
Some travelers call it the most beautiful place of the continent because of its
serene character.

Polar Icecap
Roughly two-thirds of our planets fresh water resides in the Polar Icecap. That
sheet of ice is extraordinarily thick and covers 98% of the continent.

Ross Ice Shelf
By definition, an ice shelf is a thick sheet of ice that is attached to land but
reaches far out to sea. The Ross Ice Shelf - the earth's largest - is as large
as France.

South Pole
One of the most remote travel destinations is the South Pole. It is the world's
southernmost point. Getting there is expensive and sometimes risky.
